3 months of absence and nature takes back her rights

For many people, confinement has meant packing up and leaving home to join friends and family while waiting for the pandemic to end. No information on the duration of this confinement had been communicated and it seemed difficult to foresee all the consequences of this indefinite absence. Donna Porée, 22 years old, had left her flat in a hurry last March, in order to quarantine herself and her boyfriend who lived on the other side of the city.

Before leaving, she had taken her phone, wallet and keys, but a bag of potatoes bought 2.50 euros at the supermarket was the last thing she thought of. So you can imagine the absolute horror of a woman who, for the first time in several months, went back to her flat in Caen, only to discover that « mutant potatoes » had taken possession of her flat.

A strange change in his flat.

Of course, Donna, like all of us, probably had no idea how long the lockdown would last, but when it finally ended she had a surprise she hadn’t expected. « When I opened the front door, I noticed a strange shape at the back of the kitchen, » explains the young communications manager.

As the light was off and the shutters closed, I didn’t realize it was the potatoes. It was only after opening the shutters that I became aware of this extraordinary spectacle ». At first Donna was terrified to see this strange shape, but as soon as she realised what it was, she found it hilarious and immediately sent photos to her friends on Snapchat. « My friends couldn’t stop laughing. They found it unbelievable, » she says.

The second life of the mutant potato

The potatoes had grown through the plastic bag and even through the gaps around the kitchen worktop, and Donna had to spend hours trying to free her kitchen from the mutant starches. « I wanted to get the bag of potatoes out of the joints in the worktop, but it wasn’t easy, » she recalls.

The germs had settled in the joints and were difficult to remove. I ended up having to cut some of the sprouts with scissors and had to fill in the holes they had made ». Instead of throwing the potatoes away, she decided to replant them in her garden to see what would happen. « I can’t wait to see what will come out of the ground, » she said. With such growth spurts, we could have giant potatoes that will invade the planet in the near future!
